My latest and only broadcast TV source of classic film getTV is celebrating the entertainment icon, Frank Sinatra's 99th birthday with an all day movie marathon and a social networking birthday party. Anybody can join in the @getTV hosted party on Twitter with the hashtag #99ReasonsWeLoveSinatra. With the remaining characters we are to express why we adore Ol' Blue Eyes. That even  lets us tweet directly from an input form that automatically adds the long hashtag. How nifty is that! The Manchurian Candidate 1962 vs 2004

The Manchurian Candidate is a 1962 Cold War political thriller film adapted by George Axelrod from the 1959 novel by Richard Condon. It was directed by John Frankenheimer and stars Frank Sinatra, Laurence Harvey, and Angela Lansbury and features Janet Leigh, Henry Silva, James Gregory, Leslie Parrish and John McGiver. The central concept of the film is that the son of a prominent, right-wing political family has been brainwashed as an unwitting assassin for an international Communist conspiracy. The Manchurian Candidate was nationally released on Wednesday, October 24, 1962, at the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Jonathan Demme directed an up-to-date version of The Manchurian Candidate in 2004, starring Denzel Washington as Major Marco, Liev Schreiber as Congressman Raymond Shaw, and Meryl Streep as Senator Eleanor Shaw (her husband is not included). This contemporary adaptation made substantial changes to the source material by dropping the Cold War background for an anti-corporation story of private and business control of the U.S. government. The American soldiers are also shown being captured in Kuwait during the Gulf War between Iraqi and UN forces.

Raymond is the brainwashed Manchurian candidate and Marco the brainwashed assassin. The novel explicitly depicts incest between Raymond and his mother. The social conventions of American cinema in 1962 limited Frankenheimer's depiction to a salacious adult kiss between mother and son. Demme's depiction of mother-son incest is more explicit.

Demme's rewritten and reworked version of The Manchurian Candidate was less critically successful than the original.

Gene Kelly dances with Jerry Mouse | Paula Abdul's Inspiration

Anchors Aweigh is a 1945 musical comedy film, directed by George Sidney in which two sailors go on a four-day shore leave in Hollywood, accompanied by music and song, meet an aspiring young singer and try to help her get an audition at MGM. It stars Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly, Kathryn Grayson, José Iturbi and Dean Stockwell. It won the Academy Award for Best Music, Scoring of a Musical Picture. Anchors Aweigh was also nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role (Gene Kelly), Best Cinematography, Color (Robert Planck, Charles P. Boyle), Best Music, Song (for Jule Styne (music) and Sammy Cahn (lyrics) for "I Fall in Love Too Easily") and Best Picture.

The movie is famous for a musical number where Gene Kelly dances with Jerry Mouse (voiced by Sara Berner). Kelly is live action while Jerry is animated. Tom Cat appears briefly in the sequence as a butler. Originally, the producers wanted to use Mickey Mouse for this segment. Walt Disney agreed, but Roy Disney rejected the deal. According to Bob Thomas' book on Roy Disney, the studio was in debt after World War II and they were focusing on trying to get their own films out on time. According to Roy, they had no business making cartoons for other people.

Paula Abdul was inspired by the scene of Kelly dancing with Jerry to create the video for her song "Opposites Attract", where she dances with an animated cat.

In the Family Guy episode "Road to Rupert", the character Stewie Griffin dances with Kelly in an attempt to rent a helicopter. To do so, the animators took the original footage, removed Jerry Mouse, and replaced him with Stewie. The dialogue was performed by Stewie's normal voice actor and Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane. However, the editing job was not perfect, as Jerry's reflection is clearly seen below Stewie.
