@TCManiacs Vick: Just another macho European lounge suit lizard? Bet if he survived the war Ilse would have found he had mistresses :D
@TCManiacs The movie does end with the two of them walking off into the fog. And there's that if-I-was-a-woman line.
@TCManiacs Casablanca: Isn't it curious that they don't let Ilse choose? Russell T Davies didn't make that mistake with Rose in Doctor Who!
@TCManiacs ... look the more noble of the two men, because Victor could have given up Ilse & he didn't - flawed selfish leader there?
@TCManiacs Vick: I'd feel wronger about betraying a promise than I would about giving up someone I desired. All structured to make Rick ...

@TCManiacs The real love story is Capt. Renault's for Rick.
@TCManiacs Rick, definitely. W/Victor, she would have played 2nd fiddle to his other causes down the line.

Wowzers! Thank you so much for linking to my blog! A really great honor!
ReplyDeleteEasy, Victor. Ilsa never treat Rick right. IF she was a quality woman she would have been honest with Rick in Paris instead of dancing a jig on his heart.
ReplyDeleteShe was indecisive and distructive and she didn't really care who she hurt.
Rick was way better off when he told her to get on the plane. I have yet to figure out why it's concidered a romantic film, it's more of a guy movie, because Rick finally deals with Ilsa the way she deserved.
(BTW there seems to be some trouble with my link - maybe remove the slash after the html? http://moviewings.blogspot.com/2009/06/on-love-and-duty-themes-in-casablanca.html
ReplyDeleteI think Ilsa made the only choice she could. Thanks for linking to my post!
ReplyDeleteAs my poor wife knows everytime I howl at the screen, Ilsa definitely should have left with Rick. Victor has his work to do and, even with the letters of transit, there's no guarantee they get out of Lisbon. Besides, she was very young when they met and more worships Victor than loves him - a bad sign in the long term.
ReplyDeleteIlsa, on the other hand, truly loves Rick for Rick. I can see Rick, Ilsa and Sam holeling up in Brazzaville. Rick and Sam helping the underground while Ilsa does her "sweet and innocent" impression to collect information.
In any case, it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest to find that Kimberly-Clark gave Wallis the money to produce "Casablanca"; I use a box of Kleenex during every showing.
Rick definitley, her relationship with Victor was not a healthy one.
